Murder of John H. Cartwright (an account by Alexander Cartwright)
A negro man, one of the party that was captured by the Indians and afterwards made his escape saw them murder John with their tomahawks and heard him beg them to spare his life. They heeded not his entreaties. I have often when a youth heard Aunt Aliph, an old negro servant of our family who remembered John and who was probably 10 years old at the time of his murder, relate the circumstances of his death as told by the escaped prisoner, who was also a servant of Robt. Our family never doubted the truth of Aunt Aliph's story.
