67. William David CARTWRIGHT was born on 14 Sep 1867 in Carroll Co, GA. He died on 21 Jan 1947 in Sherman, Grayson Co, TX. He was buried in Sherman, Grayson Co, TX (West Hill Cemetery). He was a Farmer and a Methodist.
Notes of Judy Morris, descendant:
The family moved to Texas in Dec 1892 according to 84th birthday article for his wife, Talula, in Fri 3 Jun 1955 Sherman Democrat. One family source said that shortly after moving to Texas, heart problems caused by rheumatic fever earlier in life made it impossible for W.D. to do significant work Another source said that the entire family (except for his wife) were stricken with typhoid fever when the family resided in Sulphur Springs, Texas. W. D.'s brain was damaged by the high fever at that time, and he never worked again, but played dominoes with his friends at the Masonic Lodge.
He was married to Talula Vaulcie NIXON (daughter of Elijah Ephrem NIXON and Martha
Emaline BLACKMON) on 6 Dec 1888 in Carrollton, Carroll Co, GA.Talula Vaulcie NIXON was born on 16 Jun
1871 in Douglasville, Carroll Co, GA. She died on 11 Mar 1962 in
Sherman, Grayson Co, TX. She was buried on 13 Mar 1962 in
Sherman, Grayson Co, TX (West Hill Cemetery). Word in the family
is that Talula was part (1/8?) Choctaw Indian; no facts
supporting this have yet been found.
Notes of Judy Morris, descendant:
After moving to Texas, because of her husband's health problems, Talula sold fabrics door to door to help support the family, until her own health failed. Talula was a very hard worker, and when she knew any of her children or grandchildren would be coming for a visit, she often worked so hard getting ready for the visit (major house cleaning, baking, painting,, etc.) that by the time they arrived she was totally exhausted ("plumb wore out" in her words) and spent most of her time in bed during the family's visit.
Talula had very firm ideas about how ladies should behave, one
being that they should never wear "pants." Visiting
granddaughters were either vexed or amused about having to leave
their shorts, slacks, or pedal pushers at home! Also, words such
as "gosh" and "golly" or anything else
remotely resembling "taking the Lord's name in vain"
were strictly forbidden in Talula's presence. William David
