Matthew CARTWRIGHT was born in 1634 in Middelburg, Zeeland Province, Netherlands. He was the son of John Cartwright (b. ca 1590, Middleburg, Zeeland Province, Netherlands) and Janeke (Janneke) Lawrence.* He died about Mar 1688/89 in St. Mary's Co., Md. (Chaptico area). According to Passenger & Immigration Index of those coming to Maryland between 1666-1750, Matthew Cartwright immigrated in 1671.He was naturalized as a citizen 19 Apr 1671, in Maryland (date recorded in Maryland Hall of Records). The naturalization record says of Matthew: "...borne att Middleborough in the Province of Zealdn [sic], under Dominion of the States Generall of the United Provinces."
Matthew's will was drawn 21 Feb. 1688-9 and probated 18 Mar 1688-9, St. Mary's County, Maryland. (PC 1, p. 77) Executors named were his wife, Sarah, and Jno. Turlinge. To sons John, Matthew, Thomas, and Peter, he left 100 acres each at Chaptico, St. Mary's County, Md. To John and to each of 3 other sons at age 18, personalty; to daughter Joanna at age 16, personalty. To wife Sarah: dower rights.
Matthew married Sarah _____ Matthew CARTWRIGHT and Sarah had the following children:

Thomas CARTWRIGHT was born in 1675. He died in 1711.

Joanna CARTWRIGHT died in 1714.
